Things that bother me about February

February is a strange month wherever I live....
  • Whether in Sudan .....For the previous four years, we have lived in Khartoum Sudan and there February is the close of Winter and the end of balmy days and crisp nights. Soon the winds will turn and the clear blue skies winter will be replaced by shades of brown again. You have just decided that you could live in that climate forever until you remember that it will not last and soon you will feel the hot breath of hell once more.... Spring time in Sudan is when the grass dies and the lettuce begins to disappear at the veggie stands along the street. February in Khartoum is the end of comfort and the beginning of gritting one's teeth again.
  • Or in Virginia.....Now I find myself in rural Virginia wondering will this winter never end... Snow is beautiful for awhile but then we want to get on with living.... and we long for the trees to put out new leaves and life for the year ahead. We are tired of cold nakedness and ready for the trees to wear real clothes again instead of the occasional white coats.
  • February means I read Leviticus.....Each year on January first, we begin reading our Bibles at Genesis 1 with the goal of reaching the last page of Revelation by the end of December... but February means reading Leviticus again, perhaps some of the most difficult pages of scripture for me to read....I love the excitement of Genesis and Exodus but then I have to wade through Leviticus and it is hard reading wherever one is.
Today I am glad that I am looking forward to Spring in Virginia and not Summer in Khartoum but I will be glad when February and Leviticus are all behind me!
